Its always puzzled me as to why new buses have brail on the stop bells…

On the newer models of First buses, the stop bells have brail on them. Fair enough, but what gets me is this…

A. Theres only one button that can be pressed on a bus to begin with. So common sense would suggest it was the bell.

and B. How the hell does a blind person know when their stop is coming up anyway?

Play.com Live

So last weekend me and bunch of mates from college went down to London for that Play.com Live thing. Spread over two days, it was hyped to be Britain’s ‘biggest-ever UK consumer-gaming event’. Which is a real good reminder as to how little we actually have of that sort of thing here.

Almost every game on show was either already released, or in trailer form. Playable unreleased games on show included Rock Band, Soul Caliber 4… Shit, if there were any more then I’ve forgotten them now there was that little.

The show felt like a bit of a rip off. We traveled way the fuck down from South Yorkshire hoping to get a go on upcoming games, (or at the very least see some new videos of them.) Best we got in most cases were trailers we saw last year.
Resident Evil 5 for example, I was looking forward to seeing something new on the game. There wasn’t a lot of chance I would be able play it (though I will admit I was hoping to.) only for me to get there and find that the Resident Evil 5 exhibit was nothing more than a single screen looping the trailer we got way the hell back last year. Star Wars Force Unleashed was the worst offender. Play.com stated the game would be there, what they didn’t mention that it was going to be there in poster form only. Lego Batman was said to be there and if it was then I don’t have a fucking clue where it was. I found Lego Indiana Jones which looked pretty good. They even held a scavenger hunt to win a PS3 or something. They’d hidden a red X somewhere at the show and if you found it you’d be entered into the draw. It was on the ceiling of their exhibit, because they couldn’t get permission off the other publishers to use their exhibits for their little game.

The entire film part of the event save the Dark Knight exhibit was a projector screen showing trailers of films that are already released in cinemas. (or in some cases on DVD)

The only real exclusive at the event was Far Cry 2. Which we queued up for almost 20 minutes to see. We got in there and watched two blokes from canada play through the November 2007 build of the game, which looked great might I add. The game will beset in an open world which the developer claimed was larger than that of Oblivion. The player could explore the place choosing which missions he wanted to do. It will be set in a realistic world, so all the stupid Feral abilities and crap have been ditched. The game is set for release in Autumn.

There were some decent freebies on offer. Know anybody with atleast 30 copies of Ice Age on DVD? Chances are they went to Play. On offer were DVDs of Ice Age, Surfs Up, Spongebob Squarepants the Movie and for older visitors Knocked Up. (All of which were the 2-disc extended editions) The venue had Ice Age DVDs coming out of its ass. I ended up with about 5. Surfs up and Spongebob were only available sunday morning and went pretty quickly. Knocked up was brought out late sunday afternoon and went within minutes.

All in all the event was disapointing but I guess Play.com have an excuse. Its their first event and couldn’t exactly prove to the developers earlier that it would be a success. I’m sure next year they’ll be able to show them the figures from this year and that will encourage publishers to show off more stuff. We all enjoyed the weekend despite the event not being all it was cracked up to be. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t too brilliant so everytime we went outside for one butt-fucking minute we came back piss-wet through. D:

Can you really imagine yourself saying that? I mean, it doesn’t really roll off the tongue like “I’m going to go watch a DVD.”  To be fair, “I’m going to go watch an HD DVD.” doesn’t sound too good either, but at least that can be shortened to DVD.

For that reason alone I’d have prefered HD DVD to win. Other than that it doesn’t make much difference to me that Blue-Ray won. I’m cool with my regular old fashioned DVD player for now. That and I’m not going to fork out for a next-gen player knowing full well that theres a 50/50 chance it will become obsolete once the hardware war settles. Fuck that for a laugh.

But for fuck’s sake! “I’m going to go watch a Blu-Ray.” sounds so goddamn retarded its unreal. My tutor told me yesterday that people were shortening it to BD. So you’d say “I’m off to watch a BD.” Now thats better but its still pretty daft sounding. Thats when my mate pointed out that BD sounds like a yorkshire bloke saying “Bee die”.
Thanks to him, whenever someone tells me they’re going to “Watch a BD.” I will imagine them sitting down to watch a snuff movie about bees. Cheers mate, you’ve already killed it for me. D:

Story of the Gravoor series

Gravoor (Don’t ask me how to pronounce that, my mate suggested the name) is series of flash games I used to make. The original was the first flash game I ever made, which means ofcourse it was pretty crappy. Afterwards I spent a year experimenting making games of all differnt genres. Eventually I came back to the Gravoor series, and released Gravoor 2 which used an improved version of the original’s engine. To my surprise it earned itself a 3.98 rating on Newgrounds, which was a damn sight better than the original which only barely dodged a blam. I was excited, and from there made Gravoor 3 and 4 based on the previous game’s success. Neither game added much to the series, they were both basically copys of Gravoor 2 but with differnt levels. It was Gravoor 4 that attracted the attention of Inglor of ArmorGames, who offered to sponser the series, which they did right up until Gravoor 6.

I originally made Gravoor 5 in the same format as the previous 3. But half way through decided that the game would benefit from a complete overhaul. So in the end, Gravoor 5 was the first proper sequel since Gravoor 2. It introduced new features to the series such as shrinking and colour changing power ups. Which I think really improved the puzzle aspect of the game, making it more than just another mouse maze. Gravoor 5 also took place within a virtual environment, instead of the forests and such which featured in the past 3 games.

Gravoor 6 came along, and was originally planned to be the final entry in the series. I wanted it to be the perfect Gravoor game, hence the name ‘Gravoor Perfect’. The main feature was a level editor, which supported importing and exporting. The idea was players could export the levels they designed and share them with friends. Making the game virtually endless. Unfortunately the editor was pretty naff in my opinion, the workspace was too small and it lagged like a mother fucker. Fans loved the game, but I wasn’t pleased with it.

A year later I decided to return to the Gravoor series and give it the finale it deserved. Gravoor 7 was the result. I started from scratch and made a new engine. The biggest improvement was hit detection. In the previous games, the mazes were all made up of squares, meaning that corridors were always really blocky. The new engine did away with the block system hence why Gravoor 7 is the only game to contain bendy corridors. The game also took players back to the forest featured in Gravoor 2, 3 and 4. Only this time it actually looked sort of like a forest.

Gravoor on your Mobile
In summer 2006, there were plans for porting Gravoor 6 to mobiles,. We had a publisher and the lot but the project was eventually scrapped due to difficultys creating a control scheme that worked well without straying too far from the original concept. (Long story short its fucking impossible.)

The story behind the name “Gravoor”
I was never any good with names. So after making the first game I showed it my mate Stu, and asked him what I should call it. He just pulled the name “Gravoor Robboors” out of his arse and told me to call it that. I asked him what it meant and he just told me it sounded like “Grave Robbers” so I should call it that. I didn’t have any better ideas so what the hell. The Gravoor Robboor name stuck up until Gravoor 3, where I took the Robboors part out.

Gravoor Adventure was a game I started making in between 5 and 6. I never got very far with making it before I canned it. The game was differnt to the other games as it was to include a large hub world. Which you guided the Gravoor around, doing tasks for differnt creatures who inhabited it. I eventually gave up on the project and made Gravoor 6 instead.

Attention Internet! The most highly anticipated movie of the year has finally arrived! and wouldn’t you know it? A Screener has already leaked onto youtube. D:

Not unlike such movies as The Ten Commandments and Ben-Hur. Tetris the movie, is a gripping screen epic filled with spectacle and drama. This movie must be seen to be believed! So sit back, relax, and enjoy.
